Fidyah and kaffarah
Enter the number of days and the local cost of feeding one person for a day.
These tools calculate; they do not rule. Where your mosque, local authority or scholar says otherwise, follow them.
How it works
Fidyah is owed by someone who cannot fast and has no prospect of making the days up, such as through chronic illness or old age: one person in need is fed for each day missed.
Kaffarah is the expiation for breaking a Ramadan fast deliberately without excuse: fasting sixty consecutive days, or, if that is not possible, feeding sixty people. Schools differ on which acts require it.
Questions
Can fidyah replace fasts I can make up later?
No. If you are able to make up the fasts later — after travel or a temporary illness — you make them up; fidyah is for those who cannot.
What counts as the cost of a meal?
An ordinary, filling meal where you live. Many mosques and authorities publish a figure each Ramadan; use theirs if they do.
